Last night I stumbled across this picture on Pinterest and it captured exactly how I’m feeling going into this weekend! Part of this scream is the stress of an exam and the other part of this scream is the excitement for the weekend and the beautiful weather that has found its way back to Malibu. I hope I can find a way to make sure I don’t let this beautiful weather go to waste this weekend.

And I hope that each and every one of you have a very happy weekend!

Kappa Klassic

Kappa Kappa Gamma has a philanthropy that every Kappa chapter across the country supports. But, what I love about Pepperdine’s chapter is we also vote on another philanthropy to support that is near and dear to one of our sister’s hearts.

This year, we fell in love with Wishing Well, which is an organization started by Pepperdine students and their mission to transform the world we live in by providing clean water to those in need.

The minute I was told these couple facts I knew this organization had my vote:

  • “According to the World Health Organization there are still 884 million people who lack access to clean water. Unclean water is responsible for 80% of all disease and over 3 million deaths every year.”
  • “One dollar can give someone in a developing country clean water for year.”

It seemed to me like this is where our chapter could make the most impact, if all it takes is one dollar to give one person in a developing country clean water for a year.

So, once the votes were counted and Wishing Well was announced the winner, our fabulous philanthropy chair, Maggie, got to planning the event that would help us raise money for Wishing Well.

Our event was called Kappa Klassic! We brought in mini golf, ping pong tables, and Arnold Palmers to campus, dressed up in preppy Kountry Klub attire, and took on the role Kappa Kaddies for each team in our tournament!

Through this event, T-shirt sales, and a silent auction, we raised enough money to build a well in Africa that will bring an entire community clean water!!

I am so proud of our philanthropy chair, Maggie, who put her heart and soul into this and so thankful for everyone else who supported Kappa and Wishing Well along the way.

My heart is happy.

P.S. If you find time to watch Wishing Well’s 26 minute documentary, I highly recommend it. Life changing and eye opening.

The Declaration of Independence

The American Dream by an Italian Director

“The Pursuit of Happyness” is about hope, overcoming odds, dreams… no matter what your circumstances are.  The movie is about the real life story of Christopher Gardner.  A man who wanted to break the cycle in his family of men not being there for their children.

The search began for just the right director to bring this real life story to life on screen.  The producers, including Will Smith, started courting an Italian director for the job.  Gabriele Muccino.  The Italian had director many Italian films but had never directed an English speaking film.  He could hardly speak English himself.  (What were the producers thinking?)  Well when they first met with him he said, “You have to be a foreigner to appreciate and understand the American dream.”  He also said that, “Chris is the essence of an American man who wanted to make it, he makes it, and then wants to show to the world that he made it.”  The producers were blown away by the Italian man’s understanding of and insight into the American dream.  He got the job.  In a sense that could have been a story of the American Dream itself.

The American Dream. An idea that  we all are entitled to the opportunity for prosperity and success, as well upward social mobility that can be achieved through hard work.

The Declaration of Independence

Dec

“We hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal.  That they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, among these are Life, Liberty and The Pursuit of Happiness…”

When Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence, he avoided defining happiness, choosing to leave it to the individual to determine his or her own meaning of the word.

So it is up to us to DEFINE OUR OWN HAPPINESS!! When you start writing your own definition of “happiness”, think about this…
