My Go To Healthy (and Easy) Snacks

I love food.  When I was younger, I would go to bed thinking about what I was going to have for breakfast the next morning, and then when I woke up, I would bug Patty about what we were going to have for dinner that night.  I also love to cook!  There is a home video of me (when I was 5) making an english muffin pizza and talking to the camera like I was filming a cooking show. Obsessed much? I think so.

As I have gotten older, and especially with the career path I have chosen (acting), I have had to learn how to make easy and healthy meals and snacks for myself.  I can’t make Macaroni and Cheese and English Muffin Pizzas every night.

What I have learned is that you have to really be prepared and have these easy snacks in your fridge, so that it’s easier for you to make good choices! (Yeah, Yeah, easier said than done.  I know.  It just has to become a habit.)

Inspired by Emily’s Easy Tips to Stay Healthy… Here are my 5 favorite “go to” snacks that I make sure to keep on hand!

HealthySnacks4

First, this is going to sound crazy and not a “snack”, but it is a can of flavored sparkling water. What I’ve realized is that most of the times when I start to feel peckish, I really am just thirsty!  So before I grab food, I grab one of these and drink it straight from the can! There is something about popping open that can and throwing back that sparkling water that really hits the spot. I have tried all the flavors, but Lime is my favorite.  I sometimes have 2-3 a day!

HealthySnacks1

Simple.  Don’t have to explain.  When they are really good, it’s like eating candy.

HealthySnacks5

Easy.  120 calories.  0% fat.  Tastes like dessert.  I love the Cherry Pomegranate and Raspberry flavors.

HealthySnacks2

First, I don’t know what is going on with my thumb in this picture.  Does this thin apple make my thumb look fat?

Moving on.  I only kinda like apples.  They aren’t my fave.  BUT when I slice them up thinly, I love them!  I don’t know why but it really makes a difference.  And if I am really hungry, I have this with a little scoop of peanut butter (duh, who doesn’t love apples and PB)!

HealthySnacks3

Finally, this Sweet and Salty treat!  It’s Gluten Free!  110 calories per bag!  AND Guilt Free!  I love that it is already portioned out for you.  If they sold this in a big bag, I would eat the whole bag in one sitting.  These are good if you need a little bit more than healthy fruit or want to be a little more naughty ;)

And that’s it for now…  I will probably come up with some more ideas when I get bored with these!

  Until then, Happy Snacking!

Easy Tips to Stay Healthy!

The older I get, the more I pay attention to my health.  I’ve noticed that I am definitely not as energetic as I used to be and as a result I feel the need to take better care of myself.   I wish I could say that my diet has changed, but I can’t quite give up the occasional pizza,  bacon,  pancakes,  mac & cheese and cocktails etc.  So to compensate,  I’ve incorporated a few easy rituals into my daily routine to keep me healthy.   ALL of my healthy items come from Annye’s Wholefoods on Nantucket! #shoplocal

Water with LemonlemonwaterThe first thing I do right after I wake up is drink a huge glass of lemon water.  Put a slice of lemon in a glass and pour water over it.  Easy.  I try to wait at least 30 minutes after I drink my glass of water before I have breakfast.  Lemons are a powerhouse fruit – they are packed with so many benefits: cleanses your system, aids in digestion, boosts immune system, helps keep your skin clear, freshens breath, curbs your appetite and gives you an energy boost!

Gummy Vitaminsgummys

Um…who could possibly say no to this?  Now I actually take my vitamins!  And now Steve actually takes his vitamins!  I’ve read a few articles that argue gummy vitamins absorb into your system better and faster than pill form.  Whatever – they are a tasty treat!  I take 2 Multi, 2 Vitamin D, and 1 Vitamin C everyday.  If I’m feeling a little depleted I’ll take 2 Vitamin C and 2 Vitamin B12. Sometimes if I’m dragging in the afternoon I’ll take a Vitamin B12.

Apple Cider Vinegar & Raw Honey Teaapplecidervinegar

I usually try to fit this in before lunch.  I put about a tablespoon of RAW apple cider vinegar and RAW honey into a glass.  Next I pour hot water over it, stir it up and enjoy.  It’s a little tangy but I really like the taste.   The health benefits of apple cider vinegar are: help cleanse the body, weight loss, clear skin, rich in potassium, helps balance your pH levels, balances your cholesterol, boosts energy, has anti cancer potential and boosts immunity.  The benefits to raw honey are: boosts immune system, promotes digestive health, helps with allergies, stabilizes blood pressure and calms nerves.  Some people add lemon to this mixture but I prefer to get my lemon intake through lemon water.

Mottomotto

Not to sound like a big fat name dropper, but I know the guy, Tom, who invented Motto.  Yep.  I’ve been drinking Motto before it was ever in this pretty bottle and being distributed all over the United States.  Besides being a refreshing and tasty drink, it is a powerhouse packed with so many amazing health benefits.  We all have heard that drinking green tea is so beneficial to our health, right?  Well Motto actually contains matcha tea, which is the highest quality green tea out there.  Drinking 1 Motto is the equivalent to drinking 12 cups of green tea!  Don’t be alarmed, there isn’t as much caffeine as you think.  Drinking 1 Motto is only like drinking 1/3 cup of coffee. Matcha has more antioxidants per gram than any other natural source, it cleanses your body, helps fight infection, increases metabolism, gives you energy, reduces stress, helps you stay focused, and promotes skin and eye health.  Motto is also made with apple cider vinegar, honey and lemon.  I have a motto pretty much every afternoon and it is the perfect pick me up!  I LOVE IT!

I’d love to hear if anyone has any easy tips for staying healthy??!!

Super Bowl Snacks

ONE WEEK TILL SUPER BOWL SUNDAY!!!!  Are you planning your party yet?  I think a must for any Super Bowl party are… Pigs in a Blanket. I seriously love Pigs in a Blanket.  Who doesn’t love Pigs in a Blanket?  I decided to try a little spin on the classic Pigs in a Blanket… RUBEN Pigs in a Blanket!

Fun Fact:  They are called Kilted Sausages in Scotland.  That makes them sound so much classier!

Here is the recipe

Ingredients: 1/2 cup of Sauerkraut*, drained and roughly chopped – 3 tablespoons pickle relish –  8oz can of Crescent Rolls – Swiss Cheese Slices – 20 Cocktail Pups – 1 eggs – Caraway Seeds

RubenPigsinABlanket1

First, Open up the Crescent Rolls and spread flat on a cookie sheet (lined with parchment paper).  Smoosh the “triangles” together so they form a rectangle.  There will be four rectangles.  Cut each rectangle into 5 strips.  (As you can see in the pictures, I cut 4 strips… I thought I was dealing with bigger weenies. hehe)

RubenPigsinaBlanket3

Mix together sauerkraut and relish and then spread a little on each strip.  Next, place a piece of swiss cheese on each strip and then top with a weenie!  Roll them up, brush with egg and sprinkle on the caraway seeds!

RubenPigsinaBlanket4

Side Note: You can also make pizza roll ups too!  Just spread on some pizza sauce, top with cheese and rolllll them up.  Brush with egg and sprinkle parmesan on top.

RubenPigsinaBlanket5

Bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes!

RubenPigsinaBlanket6

Serve with Thousand Island Dressing or Sweet & Hot Mustard for dipping… and of course beer! I got Sam Adams Boston Lager in honor of my Patriots.  Even though they are not playing this year…

Want a bite?? YUMMY!

*A big thank you to Larry King and his Brooklyn Water Bagel Company for supplying me with Sauerkraut. (I got friends there.)  They hooked me up….. There are only ginormous jars of Sauerkraut at the grocery store and I didn’t want to buy it for this one recipe because I was never going to use it again.  I wanted to pull a George Banks in Father of The Bride when he started ripping open hot dog bun packages…. I just need like 1/8 of the huge jar of Sauerkraut.
