The Nantucket Girl – Julia

I am constantly asked, “What is it like to live on Nantucket year-round?”  Well, I decided to answer this question in a series of blog posts called, “The Nantucket Girl.”  Every few weeks, I will feature a friend who calls this beautiful island home.  She will share with you some of her favorite things about Nantucket and also her favorite picks at Milly & Grace!  I hope this will give everyone a glimpse of what it’s like to be a girl living 30 miles out to sea.

So, I present to you..

Tell us a little about yourself: I have had the pleasure of spending my summers working at Milly & Grace since my best friend Emily opened the store four years ago. Since I am always surrounded by lovely things, it is hard to ever bring home a paycheck! In the off-season I am lucky enough to work with children as a preschool teacher. Although the winters on Nantucket can be quiet, I love that I get to see dozens of smiling little faces every day. This past year has been the busiest of my life. I recently adopted a dog, accepted a new teaching position, and got engaged.

How long have you called Nantucket home?: I am an island native.

What do you do in Nantucket?:  I am a preschool teacher at Children’s House and a Milly & Grace girl in the summers.

Relationship Status: Engaged to be married to fellow island native Stephen Maury. We are planning a June 21, 2014 wedding at Sankaty Head Golf Club.

Hobbies:  I absolutely love to read. I can’t go to sleep at night without reading at least a chapter or two.

Guilty Pleasure:  Bravo TV.

Favorite Blogger: Style Me Pretty has been my go-to blog since becoming engaged.

Favorite Quote:  “When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life.” – John Lennon

Tell us about your life on Nantucket:  I recently moved to an apartment downtown. I walk to work, to the movies, to restaurants… everywhere. Convenient apartment aside, my life on Nantucket is about my friends and family. I try to combine my love for the natural beauty of the island while spending time with the people I care about most. One of the great things about Nantucket is that your friends are always willing to visit!

Favorite time of year:  I prefer the fall and winter. The slower pace suits me.

What’s your perfect day on Nantucket?:  In the summer my ideal day would be spent on Quidnet beach with my dog, my fiancé, a good book and sandwiches from Something Natural. On crisp days in the fall I like to take walks on conservation land like Sanford Farm.

Favorite:

Shops: Parchment, Flock, Mitchell’s Book Store, Vis-à-vis, and Milly&Grace (of course!)

Restaurants:  Black Eyed Susan’s, Pi Pizzeria, Company of the Cauldron

Beach:  Quidnet

Nantucket Event:  The day after Thanksgiving is the Tree Lighting Ceremony on Main Street. It is a truly special way to ring in the holiday season.

Tell us an interesting fact about living on Nantucket: More than half of the island is forever conserved from development. It’s wonderful to know that the island will remain largely unchanged for future generations.

What’s the hardest part about living on Nantucket?:  I think everyone could use a PinkBerry within driving distance but truthfully I don’t find it hard to live on Nantucket. I wouldn’t trade my life here for anything!

Tell us something others may not know about this little island: I lived in New York for 6 years and I’ve always found it hard to believe that Nantucket is actually twice the size of the island of Manhattan.

Top Picks at Milly & Grace:

This V-neck Contrast Frock by Tracy Reese is Julia’s top pick for a casual, yet flirty day look!

Wedding Wednesday – Honeymoon Spots

Are you having trouble deciding where to go for your honeymoon? To me, it seems like everywhere you look to research a honeymoon location, you’re given the same typical locations. Not that there is anything wrong with Fiji, Italy, or the Sandals Honeymoon Package. I would be more than happy to go to any of those places. t’s just that sometimes I’m curious to see not so traditional places suggested. So, I decided to come up with a few on my own.

Bali, Indonesia: The Como Shambhala Estate looks like such a wonderful place to relax in one of the most peaceful settings. If I had to sum up what I think this honeymoon vacation would be like in one word, I think it would have to be zen. And after planning a wedding, which can sometimes always be somewhat stressful, I think all brides and grooms could use a little bit of zen.

Napa Valley, California: Sometimes leaving the United States isn’t an option or maybe it’s a little intimidating for some. Hotel Yountville has a similar feel to Italy and is perfect for the couple that would love to take part in wine tastings.

Cabo San Lucas, Mexico: Villa Grande is the perfect place for a more adventurous couple, who also would like some time to relax and soak up the sun. On this trip couples could just relax on the beach or they could go kayaking, snorkeling, hiking, whale watching, etc.

London, England: And for those who love to be on the go, sightseeing in London would just be magical. The Corintha Hotel would be the perfect place to come home to every night after bopping around town to relax and recharge for the next day.

Where did you go on your honeymoon? Or where have you always dreamed of going on your honeymoon?

Walking to Great Point Lighthouse

I am kind of obsessed with lighthouses! I think its because I grew up in Wisconsin and had never seen a lighthouse before.

I saw cows and corn and cheese!

Last year I really wanted to see the third lighthouse on Nantucket, but it’s not easy to get there.  Usually people rent a jeep and drive to it, but last June you were not able to do this because of birds or something.  So, James and I went to Wauwinet to look around and on a whim, decided we would just start walking to Great Point!

4.2 miles there and 4.2 miles back! 8.5 miles round trip!  On soft sand. In cheap sandals. With no water.

It started off fun!  See – I was so happy to make it to mile marker 2!

Then the complaining started, “Are we there yet?”  “I’m thirsty!” “My feet and back hurt!” I will let you guess who was doing the complaining.  Finally, we saw it!  Great Point in all its glory!

I felt like we were looking at the Emerald City!  However, unlike Dorothy and the gang we still had a while to go.  This lighthouse was like a mirage.  You see it.  You keep walking towards it, but is it even really there or is it just a figment of our imagination?

Keeping with the theme of the Wizard of Oz, remember, in the movie, when the Witch sent the flying monkeys to capture Dorothy?  Well, the Wicked Witch of Nantucket, let’s call her the Grey Lady, sent birds for us!  Hundreds and hundreds of birds that didn’t appreciate us trespassing on their land.

They started circling us, swooping down, making noises, (I swear I heard one say “LEAVE THIS PLACE!”)  We tried to keep up conversation, but after awhile I noticed these birds did not like it when we talked.  So, we ran! James jogged ahead, flailing his arms at the incoming birds; his only protection being his sandals!

I got this one picture before the intense dive bombing started and I screamed, “What am I going to do if a bird pecks me before my wedding?”  (I know I tend to be a little dramatic, but it was actually scary!)

After what seemed like hours, the birds cleared and we had made it!  Great Point Lighthouse!

We had to start walking back before the sun set.  We dreaded getting past those birds again, but unless we wanted to walk in complete darkness we had to get going.  On the way back, we met a baby seal sunbathing on the shore.  I wanted to get closer, but James decided that since we were almost pecked by birds, we didn’t need to have this baby seal’s mother maul us for getting too close to its baby.

If it wasn’t for animal rights, I may have tried to capture these swans for our wedding. (Just kidding, or am I?)

IMG_3993

We made it back just in the nick of time.

We enjoyed a nice dinner at Toppers afterward.

In closing, walking to Great Point was actually so much fun! I highly recommend it.  However, bring some water, better shoes, and watch out for those birds!

In other news, “Tuesdays With Tim” is now going to feature a “Book of the Month” for a sort of online book club!   I have always wanted to be a part of a book club! My choice for this month is the highly anticipated Night Film by, Marisha Pessl.

Screen Shot 2013-08-19 at 11.15.59 PM

I am so excited for this book, but it’s not going to be for everybody!  It’s supposed to be extremely scary (like birds dive bombing you as you walk to a lighthouse scary!)  If you scare easily maybe give my first selection a pass and check back next month!  I don’t want to give anyone nightmares! :)  If you like a good scare though, join me in reading Night Film.  It’s released today!  Every month I will review the book and then pick a new one!  Can’t wait to read and talk about this book that is being described as “A literary mystery that’s also a page turner…Night Film might be the most talked about novel this summer!” – Time Out New York

See you on Tuesdays!
